PDP11 Diagnostic Database - Home

Motivation

Digital Equipment Corporation Corporation (DEC) made diagnostic programs for every PDP-11 component they made. Much of these diagnostics have survived on the Internet ... collected on different web sites and mostly hidden in deep directory trees.

This database tries to be a central index for all known Internet files.

How to use

To find all resource files or URLs for a given DEC hardware, select the device in the Device Index. The device info page lists all diagnostic modules and all files.

To find all files or hardware related to a given diagnostic module, use the Module Index.

All module and device pages contain many sub lists and all items are heavily inter-linked.
So "you are in a maze of twisty little passages, all different" ...

You can download any resource file just by clicking its name link.

Links to the main indices are provided in every page header and page footer.

Objects in the database

A diagnostics module is a PDP-11 program, which tests several components of one ore more hardware devices. Modules come in many revisions and patch levels and in different media format.

A device is some piece of tested hardware: a circuit board (like "M8254"), a whole device ("RL11") or a whole computer system.
A device is tested by more than one module ... because there are several versions of a given module, or one module tests several devices.

A resource file is a file which is related to a module. It can be something like a papertape image, a disk image, a disk file, a scan of a assembler listing, a whole book, or just a single manual page.
All file are located on the Internet. However in many cases this database references local file copies, if pdf books had to be split in pages or OCR was done by the author.

URL's are given for modules and files whenever possible.

The term "device" is also used quite beyond his meaning:
A "device" is technically just a container for a bunch of modules, and a module is just another name for "program" or "document".
So a "device" is also used for diagnostic monitors (runtime environments like XXDP and X11) or microfiche collections.
